Veteran Formula 1 journalist Pino Allievi claims in Gazzetta dello Sport that Alonso has signed a four-year agreement to drive for Ferrari from 2011 to 2014.
An Alonso/Ferrari tie-up has been mooted at various times and was widely rumoured while Renault was struggling to field a competitive car for Alonso during the first part of last season.
However, Ferraris decision to confirm its current driver line-up of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen through to the end of 2010, coupled with Renaults resurgence and Alonsos two-year contract extension with the French manufacturer, appeared to take it off the agenda.
But the Gazzetta story suggests Alonso may even take Raikkonens place at Ferrari in 2010 if the Finn follows up his weak world title defence of 2008 with another lacklustre campaign.
A Ferrari spokesman declined to comment on the report other than to reiterate that “we have two drivers signed to the end of 2010”.
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has made no secret of his admiration for Alonso and recently described the Spaniard is "a fantastic driver, no question" and "a team leader", while stressing that "for the moment we don't have any problems with our current drivers".
