The former world champion vowed to take a hard-charging approach to the race after qualifying seventh, and was involved in several incidents on race day.
He sustained a puncture after hitting the Massenet barriers, became one of a handful of drivers to gamble on extreme wet tyres, tipped Nick Heidfeld into a spin and smashed his own front wing in the process, and then took a punt on dry tyres several laps before anyone else.
The additional pit stops to repair damage and the time lost on inappropriate tyres left him a lowly 10th at the flag.
But he believes his approach was the right one even if his choices proved incorrect on this occasion.
"This is a missed opportunity, but we have no regrets," Alonso said.
"We are not fighting for the championship so we can take some risks.
"I was on the the extreme wet tyre when the track started to dry and I was the first to pit for dry tyres.
"It was still a bit early and I made a few mistakes, but after that I was one of the fastest drivers and I set the third fastest lap in the race."
Alonso reckons a strong points finish would have been on the cards had he stayed out of the wall in the early laps.
"With a bit more luck, we would have finished in the points – when I had my accident, I was in front of Mark Webber, who went on to finish fourth," said the Renault driver.
